    Minjal and Nik

Something I always look forward to are Indian weddings. The celebrations are fantastic! Though I’ve shot at quite a few, one thing I haven’t seen was a groom on a car during the Baraat! Minjal and Nik were great, and we were fortunate enough to be with them for two days, so the slideshow actually represents two days of coverage. We were again fortunate enough to work with Drish from Drish Couture – be sure to take a look at the work she did with the decorations!

This first workshop is targeted at beginning to intermediate hobbyists with an interest in capturing documentary material and candid moments. We will discuss how to use wide to normal range lenses to enrich storytelling and to create dynamic, layered images. Whether it’s street photography, family gatherings, children, or weddings you’re interested, this is a great introduction to serious camera work.

This workshop will take place over two sessions. An assignment will be given on Tuesday the 4th, and we will discuss storytelling and lensing with cameras. On Thursday the 6th we will review and discuss images taken for the assignment and where to go from there.

    Anne and Mike

OK, the first semi-hot July Saturday finally came. But no rain! And it was really quite nice by the time the afternoon and evening rolled around. I commented to Anne that every time I’ve seen her, the first thing she’s done was offer food. I went to the engagement session, and she had cooked a whole lunch! Then, on the rehearsal dinner, she made sure I got some food, and, even for the morning of the wedding, she offered more food. Just too nice! Mike was beaming all day, and Anne couldn’t stop smiling. Danielle Bobish from Curtain Up Events did a fantastic event keeping everything running smoothly. Even when the day was stalled, she kept her cool and got everything back up to seepd. It was also nice seeing Sissi, who did the make-up and hair, after just working with her for Liz and Danny a few weeks back.

    Portraits

So I talked a little about the plain stuff and my trip to Saugerties recently. Here’s a little more. Some of you probably know the hair stylist Stacy Pitt. She does some absolutely fantastic work! And she’s a lot of fun to work with to boot. I ran into her at Grishma’s wedding not too long ago, and I asked if she would sit for a portrait session. I thought she had a great look about her, and below are some of my favorites from our session on Tuesday. We shot them at her new studio, which, I might add, looks great! If she weren’t doing hair, I’d think she could have a great career as an interior designer. It also happens that my friend Ivan was in town, and I did a shoot with him the day after.

I love taking portraits. Between expression, body language, light, and place, they can say so much about a person. I especially love environmental portraiture, where the surroundings become part of the character of the picture. By nature, photography is a fabrication. Yes, it is based on what happens in real life, but just by shifting the timing, cutting out an element here or there, or focusing your attentions on one thing or another, the entire meaning of a picture can be changed. To that end, especially when you’re doing a portrait, I think it’s important to keep it honest. Here are some highlights from my shoots:

    Carolina and Rocco

The streak of ridiculously nice July weather continues. Can we ask for more? All I need say is perfect weather, great couple, and Tribeca Rooftop. How can you not love that?

    A Weekend in Saugerties

I often tell people that, while weddings are special, I don’t shoot them in a special manner. Actually, I try my best to do the opposite. To shoot weddings exactly like anything else. I’ve always wanted to connect people as much as possible with what’s there. I think my most successful pictures are the ones that let people feel the the mood of a place or the intimacy of the moment most deeply, and I think that’s true whether it’s a wedding or anything else.

So what does my regular shooting look like? Well, it happened that other than a Friday event, I finally had a weekend off! OK, not quite off – there were some things to be done here and there, but I was able to slip out to Saugerties to spend some time with my wife, who has been there for the past week. Her parents came out to the East Coast last week to spend some time with their grandson and daughter. They are staying in a small resort area, sort of a back to the basics type of thing, and I thought it was fantastic being out there, except for the mosquitoes. I hate mosquitoes, so it seems ironic that they love me. The living area was a time capsule, taking me back to my youth, and it was a blast observing the interplay between it and nature.

    Liz and Danny

I arrive at most events early. It’s a constant fear of mine that I’ll miss something big. Sometimes, I’m a lot early, as was the case here, so having a hotel near Marie Belle was a real bonus. I don’t know what it was, but, somehow, as I sat there sipping my spicy iced chocolate at the Cacao Bar, I just felt like the day was going to be silky smooth. The weather was breezy and bright, and things just felt good. It turned out I was right. Liz and Danny were married at Battery Gardens, situated right along the water, and Liz was completely calm and cool the whole day through. That’s a good thing, too, because Danny was a character. And I mean that in the best way possible. He was a blast! Check him out on the dance floor.

Susie, Calen, and Photography in General

I just took some pictures of Susie and her two month old, Calen, and I’m thrilled with the results! I also had a discussion with her at Pinkberry today, which is located less than a block away from me. Gotta love being next to the Empire State Building. She asked what I liked about photography, and I was trying to explain that I liked things as they are. I really never felt a strong need to capture people smiling, or, for that matter, any way in particular. This isn’t to say that I don’t like happy people. I love happy people. But, if someone isn’t happy, I just don’t think that there’s anything wrong with that. I really enjoy seeing people as they are, in all moods, moments, and manners of being. There are so many interesting expressions people have, a smile being one of many. To that end, I thought I’d post a couple of the shots. Calen is adorable, by the way!

Also, this one was taken by my wife, Katya. I thought she did a great job!
