Lindsay runs a great set of workshops that cover the ins and outs of the wedding planning process with experts from all fields. I’ll be participating as a panel member this Saturday, and there are several more events she has coming up. I’ll post some of the topics I talk about next week.

    A Winter Reception

The Boathouse looks great any time of year, but on a snowy day in the middle of winter, no other place feels more right. Kara’s wedding took place last December on a brisk winter day, and it was a perfect party. The reception kicked into gear right from the start, and lasted all night long with a group of longtime friends that really seemed to enjoy one another.

One of the things I’ve noticed is that receptions and cocktail hours tend to take a back seat in the wedding photography world. In portfolios and blogs, you’ll see shot after shot of the prep, the details, and the photoshoots, but receptions? Not so much. I think that’s too bad, because they really can have a life of their own.

When I conceived of my own wedding, I thought of it in terms of the ceremony. That was unquestionably the thing I focused on, so, when the reception came, I didn’t know what to expect. Much to surprise, it turned out to be as much fun as I’ve had any other day in my life, but beyond that, there was just an incredible energy in the air. At one point, you suddenly realize that everyone there is there for you, and the feeling is spectacular.

So, when it comes to receptions, I try my hardest to figure out the vibe and bring it out in the pictures I take. It’s that special mix you get when you put together a group of lifelong friends and family members from two worlds. I thought it really came through with Kara.
